Carmen and Sofia’s Story with Floating Doctors
Carmen, our Dental Lead, and Sofia, our Health Education Coordinator recently completed their fellowships with Floating Doctors. The transition from their lives in Spain to off-grid living off the coast of Panama and working with fewer resources was challenging, but rewarding. Below, they share a bit of their experiences. Hola!

Hi! We are Carmen and Sofia, two Spanish friends who decided to leave behind our jobs as dentists and psychologists, and put our lives on hold to start a new and completely different stage in Panama, far from our comfort zone, and be lucky enough to work together at Floating Doctors, where we have been able to get to know in depth the culture and needs of the Ngäbe-Bugle population, giving the best of ourselves and everything we know about our professions. Undoubtedly an experience we will never forget.
It all started in September 2023, when I, Carmen, came to work as a dentist at Floating Doctors. At that time I was not yet aware that it was going to change my life. Neither my family, nor my friends, nor even I myself was totally sure of what I was going to experience from that very moment on.
At the beginning, it took me a while to adapt, so much so that I decided to return home after three months.
Before returning to Spain, I was lucky enough to meet incredible people and places that made me change my mind and appreciate all the good things I had around me. So before I left I knew I was going to return to complete my 6 months of work.
When I returned to Floating Doctors I felt very welcomed and happy. When I returned to the communities where I worked as a dentist, I was truly aware of all the good I was doing for the many people who remembered me and thanked me for what I was doing for them, so much so, that I realized that I was the one who really felt grateful to all these people. I felt so good that when I talked about it with my family and friends, they all shared my happiness. Especially my friend Sofia, who was planning to come to see me.
We were organizing a trip to Latin America after my time in Panama was over, and everything changed when Sofia asked me if she as a psychologist could contribute something to Floating Doctors. So we decided to come back together to work for 3 more months after our trip.
Carmen and I, Sofia, have known each other since the first day of university and have lived together ever since. I have shared Carmen’s experiences from the other side of the screen every time we called each other and she also shared in my experience looking for a job abroad, until Carmen told me that Floating Doctors had a vacancy as a Health Educator. Without thinking about it and without being accepted yet, I packed two giant suitcases for our trip through Latin America with the conviction of staying the next 3 months in Panama with her.
The first few weeks for me were a bit hard, as this way of life is the opposite of what I was used to, and I could appreciate the reality in these populations. As a Health Educator I have had the opportunity to talk to many people, who have made me change my perspective on life completely, and being a psychologist I have also been able to understand many other necessities we provide in addition to all the valuable medical information we offer.
In short, despite having our homes far away, we consider Floating Doctors as our family and our home. We will never have enough words to thank you for the incredible experience we have had, all that we have learned and how much we have grown. We have felt so fortunate to be a part of this organization that brings so much help and so many resources to people who have never had them.
Being lucky enough to have shared the last 3 months together is something we will always keep in our hearts.
