Already at the vessel are Floating Doctors Bo’sun Noah and Bill McCann of the Floating Doctors Advisory Board. As an experienced boat-builder, Bill McCann oversaw initial assessment and construction planning for the refit. His experience in marine craftsmanship and managing multi-million dollar construction projects will make possible the enormous volume of work required in the short time before hurricane season. After opening their warehouse inventory and offering us whatever was needed, the pharmacist and staff at DRI added many more items they thought would be helpful over the coming months. With the much larger Southern Wind, the storage problem and the need for DRI to drop-ship additional supplies to Floating Doctors has been eliminated; if further supplies are needed, however, DRI can bundle supplies for Floating Doctors with shipments to overseas clinics they support along the voyage route. The generosity of DRI and their support of Floating Doctors in its infancy was one of the most important factors in the success of organizing the Floating Doctors mission.
March 30, 2009: Floating Doctors Acquire 76-foot Sailboat ‘Southern Wind’
Thanks to the hard work of Floating Doctors supporter Edson, a marine surveyor who has been helping us in the search for a bigger vessel, Floating Doctors have acquired the 76-foot sailing vessel Southern Wind to use for our mission. Built on the design of a commercial fishing double-ender, she weighs 140,000 pounds and the capacity to carry many tons of medical supplies and up to 20 crew. Dr. Ben flew to Palm Coast, Florida and met Dennis and Jeannette, the current owners—they are donating the Southern Wind to Floating Doctors. The vessel needs a complete refit but one thing the Floating Doctors have a great supply of is labor! It will take a few months to rebuild the Southern Wind, but her triple-fiberglass, triple-marine ply, and steel keel-plated hull will be safe and allow Floating Doctors to carry much more help to those in need. The crew will rendezvous in Florida as soon as possible to begin repairs and outfitting.

There is a potential opportunity for Floating Doctors to acquire a much larger vessel; this would allow far more medical supplies and more medical personnel to be housed onboard. After 33 years sailing the seven seas, the Blue Norther will be put to pasture in the soothing fresh water of Lake Michigan. The new owners have their own warehouse, mechanic, and aluminum welder and are planning to spend the rest of the winter renovating her and then cruising on the lake during the Summer. Blue Norther left the ocean for the last time when the Ventura Boatyard lifted her onto a flatbed truck for the long journey overland. Despite the tornadoes along the way, she arrived safe and sound in the Wisconsin snow. Fair Winds, Blue Norther!

November 1st and 2nd 2008: Chaminade College Prep Charity Kayaking Trip to Santa Cruz Island
On November 1st and 2nd, 25 students, faculty and parents from Chaminade College Preparatory in West Hills participated in our first Charity Kayking trips out to Santa Cruz Island off Ventura, CA. Many thanks to everyone who showed up at the Island Packers terminal in Ventura on that cold grey morning! The Island Packers hi-speed ferry carried everyone over; on Saturday there were dolphins everywhere, and on Sunday a Minke whale was breaching over and over again on the way home!
At the island, everyone suited up with guides JD and Greg from Paddlesports of Santa Barbara, who outfitted everyone with wetsuits, kayaks and gear and brought them on a tour of the caves and sea life along the east end of Santa Cruz Island. A south swell pushed clear blue water from the Santa Barbara channel right up to the island, and through crystal clear water jellyfish, seals and fish swam in the kelp forests below.
In some of the caves people could pull their kayak up in front of a blowhole in the rocks and receive a blast of air and spray when the swells rolled through the caverns, in others the water became still and calm inside the depths of the caves. For most of the people, it was their first time visiting Channel Islands National Park, but hopefully it will not be the last!

August 12th 2008: Acquired Blue Norther
Floating Doctors acquired the 43’ Blue Norther, a 1977, Doug Petersen aluminum-hulled sloop! The Blue Norther, on closer inspection, appears to have been outfitted for racing with (for all you sailors out there) several additional stays that can be attached at various places on the deck and tightened to change the tension on the mast, as well as a very large Gennoa and a Spinnaker pole and sail.
She has the space to carry about 2,000 pounds of medical supplies and gear, as well as her five crew and guest clinicians. On the first test sail outside Santa Barbara Harbor, Captain Scott Walther exclaimed that it was one of the fastest cruisers he had sailed. She drafts 7’, giving her enough stability to safely handle offshore conditions as well as the shallow draft necessary for negotiating shallow coastal waters.
With the unexpected sudden arrival of the Blue Norther, we have decided to conduct a shorter, 12 month mission to Central America and the Pacific with five of the crew BEFORE adding a second, larger vessel to accommodate additional physicians and crew on the two-year circumnavigation originally planned.
August 12th 2008: Presented to Optimists Club at Gladstones

Here is the Optimists’ Creed as it appears on the plaque they presented:
Promise Yourself-
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
August 4th 2008: Al Martinez Column and Topanga Messenger Article
Al Martinez, a highly respected journalist and syndicated columnist for the LA Times, wrote an amazing article that captures the essence of what Floating Doctors intends to accomplish and introduced the project to the community at large. Similarly, on the same day, an article by Cassandra Weissman hit the newsstands in the Topanga Messenger. Thanks to everyone who emailed offering help and suggestions—some people introduced Floating Doctors to other organizations or even friends and family in many of the countries to be visited. Others told of various helpful products, offered translation services and many people sent donations; it felt like a thousand hands were holding the project afloat! A special thank you to one particular donor from Santa Monica, CA: this person included a note with their donation that read simply, “I wish it could be more, but maybe this will help put some wind into your sails.”
Check out this link to read Al Martinez’s column: http://www.latimes.com/news/columnists/la-me-martinez4-2008aug04,0,1750114.column
July 16-17 2008: Benefit Night (Floating Doctors Project Launch)
As the full moon rose over the ridge behind Dr. George LaBrot and Paula LaBrot’s lovely home in the Santa Monica Mountains, Floating Doctors was launched for the first time. About 60 people came on each night and the response could not have been better. A thousand thanks to everyone who gave a donation on the night, sent a donation afterwards, or reached out with advice and suggestions. Spot prizes were raffled off (congratulations to the winners!) and it was wonderful to see so many old friends and to meet so many new ones. Thanks to everyone who came, the Floating Doctors hit the ground running.
